Don, the 990 would be more tractor for less $$. If you don't mind a regular standard shift transmission. It's hard to give advice or opinion Without knowing what the tractor will be used for.

Don, Have you sat on and operated both of them? That's really what you need to do. The cost is so close, it depends on which one fits YOUR needs the best. To be very general, the more loader work you intend to do and the more frequently you will be on and off the tractor, the more I would tend to the 4310. If your primary purpose is that you have a large area you need to keep trimed, bush hog or finish mow, the longer you stay on at one time and don't vary gears the more I would lean toards the 990. Your options include a ballast box so I presume the former will be your intentions and the 4310 would be the most user friendly. They are both by the way very good prices.

My experience has shown me that the dealers have a lot harder time selling the standard transmissions. In this day in age most people don't want them so if you plan on keeping it forever it wouldn't matter. Again, usage still makes the decision in most cases. Don't sacrafice what you want over 1k when your talking about spending 18k.

Back to the basic question:
Using my math, the 990 is about 16K without the loader ~ 3K for the loader and 300 for the ballast box. So list is near 19.5K and he will sell for 17.7 or 9% off list.
The 4310 with HST lists for 19.8 K adding loader and ballast box gives 23.1K. He will sell for 18.6K or 20% off list.
The one with the higher discount is a new model where as the older one is a 20 year old model.
What do you think?
If you are using the loader then the HST will be a god send and save you a lot of time and brake repair. ....

Don't let the amount of discount sway your decision, all that has to do with is the dealers margins. They are extremely different between the 90 series tractors and the 4020 series tractors. ....

Based on the Minnesota contract pricing, the "10" series discount is about 26% while the 790,990 series is about 10%. It's like the margin difference between a Caddy and a Chevy Cavalier. Basic models are priced low to attract the type of customers who want them. A tractor is a long term investment. It's best to first decide on the dealer, brand and model that you like best and best suits your needs. To equate it again to autos, why would anybody buy a Cavailer if they have six kids just because the price was right? You wouldn't even bother to look at it because it doesn't suit your needs. Why worry about the price on a 790 or a BX2200 or a M5700 if it doesn't suit your needs?
